An industry that matters, a career that gives something back

Sarah Beatty, our Commercial Director, discusses why insurance could be the career choice for you.

Have you ever considered a career in general insurance?

As we all know, ensuring you chose the right job is important.  Part of this is thinking ahead to consider whether you want that job to turn into a lifelong and rewarding career.

I did exactly this nearly 20 years ago when I joined Insurance Corporation, and have been part of the rewarding, innovative and, at times, exciting general insurance industry ever since.  I am going to explain why I am so passionate about insurance as a career and help you decide if it might be the right career choice for you.

What is insurance?

Everyone has heard of insurance.  Most people’s experience of the industry is cover purchased to protect some of the most important things in your life - your home, your car or perhaps an upcoming holiday.

The general insurance industry is so much more than this!  It is a diverse, relatable, and interesting industry, which impacts everyone.  Most services and businesses you deal with daily are only able to operate due to the protection the insurance industry provides.

Put simply, without insurance you could find yourself without your morning take away coffee, unable to attend school or university, or even unable to go for dinner in your favourite restaurant.

The insurance industry has a global reach and is one of the most important and influential parts of the UK economy.   The UK & Channel Islands general insurance sector employs over 400,000 people. By joining the industry, you will find yourself making a difference to people’s lives every day.

Why should I consider a role and career in insurance?

Now that I have piqued your interest in the industry generally, I would like to share my top 5 reasons why you should consider joining the local insurance industry in the Channel Islands.

In a nutshell it is a varied and interesting profession, which encompasses a wide range of skills and talents.  The local industry offers a real opportunity to develop and grow every day, bringing your goals to progress and succeed within reach.

1. Be part of our local community and make a difference

The local insurance industry is about protecting the community and I am proud to be part of an industry which gives back.  It is important to me and provides a strong purpose to the job I do every day.

A recent study found that more than 9 out of 10 workers would trade a portion of their salary for meaningful work. Helping our local community understand and protect themselves against risk is both meaningful and important work.  This is proven to make you happier and more productive in your job.

Insurance Corporation also have a very well established ESG presence, including volunteering and various community and environmental initiatives, just visit our Community tab to find out more.

2. Be part of a historic, stable and growing industry

When I reference a historic industry, I really mean it.  Royal & Sun Alliance Group, who are Insurance Corporation’s parent company, has a history which spans back longer than 300 years, including insuring the Titanic!

Over its history, the insurance industry has proven to be more stable than some other fields and provides good job security in the local market.  As long as risk exists, it will need to be managed by the industry, no matter what position the economy is in.  This makes it incredibly sustainable.

3. The level of opportunity and the ability to develop a broad skill set

A very appealing part of the local insurance industry is the wide variety of opportunities available across a number of different career paths.  It is even possible to have several careers across different functions within a single insurance company.  The ability to develop a broad skill set will allow you to be more knowledgeable and experienced in your role.

The various roles typically available within Insurance Corporation and the local industry include:

  • Actuarial

  • Administration

  • Broking

  • Business operations

  • Claims handling

The opportunities are endless!

4. Professional Development

As with most industries, your studies and development do not need to stop at school or university.  Insurance is no different; there are lot of options for you to become a certified and qualified insurance professional.  Insurance Corporation actively support professional development with the cost, time of for study as well as support from the rest of the team.
