Little Trees Project wins top prize

A tree-planting project in local schools has won the coveted Insurance Corporation Conservation Award for 2012. Organised by the Guernsey Society of the Men of the Trees, the Little Trees Project focused on tree planting and habitat creation to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Now the team behind the project have been presented with a cheque for £2,000 to help fund their endeavours.

‘We were greatly impressed,’ says chairman of Insurance Corporation and founder of the competition, Peter Walpole. ‘It is not easy creating a worthwhile conservation environment in a school setting as there are so many factors to take into account that influence how successful an initiative could be.  By making an intelligent and passionate case for the project Vanessa Crispini-Adams and her team have managed to get the backing and support required to make a real difference and their entry set the standard for others to beat early on in our judging process.’

Clive & Geraldine Silk were Highly Recommended for their conservation garden, as was Fiona Pollock whose organic vegetable growing business impressed the judges. They both win £250.

In a closely contested competition this year, the top school was La Houguette Primary who last won in 1998. The school wins £1,000 over three years to further develop their conservation garden and build a raised walkway over the wet meadow to provide a viewing platform for the children. Each school that entered the competition also receives a bird box and food courtesy of Earlswood Nursery Garden Centre.
